Former President Donald Trump’s prominent Florida properties, including his Mar-a-Lago estate, are outside the expected path of Hurricane Milton.
Mar-a-Lago, the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, and the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter are all located in Palm Beach County. Additionally, the Trump National Doral Miami is in Miami-Dade County. These areas lie outside the National Weather Service’s forecast cone for Milton.
The storm, which was once again raised to a Category 5 hurricane Tuesday afternoon, is expected to hit the populous Tampa Bay region head-on Wednesday night, bringing with it devastating storm surges and high winds to some areas still reeling from Hurricane Helene, which hit Florida’s Big Bend region on September 26 as a Category 4.
Mar-a-Lago is located in Palm Beach, Florida, on the Atlantic coast, south of Milton’s current projected path. This estate spans approximately 20 acres between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.
It is not only a private club but also serves as the residence of former President Donald Trump. The property is known for its opulent architecture and scenic surroundings.
Mar-a-Lago, a solid rock structure with stucco-covered walls, has a history of withstanding major hurricanes. In 2004, the estate faced back-to-back Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne.
“We lost a lot of the vegetation that gave Mar-a-Lago its character,” Trump told the Palm Beach Post after Frances. “I wasn’t there for the storm, but I’ve been told by my people there that it re-landscaped the place. There was a little flooding in some of the basements, too.”
Mar-a-Lago still faces the potential for tropical storm-strength winds ranging from 58 to 72 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. The forecast for Palm Beach predicts heavy rainfall through mid-week.
The Sarasota offices of Trump Media, the parent company of Truth Social, are directly in the storm’s projected path.
Trump is the largest shareholder of Trump Media, a publicly traded company primarily operating the Truth Social platform.
Newsweek reached out to Trump Media and the Trump campaign for comment regarding the Truth Social office and its employees.
The former president launched Truth Social after he was banned from Twitter and Facebook following the riot at the U.S. Capitol in 2021. The platform has struggled to generate revenue, losing nearly $58.2 million last year while bringing in just $4.1 million, according to regulatory filings.
Trump does not personally own the Trump Media office property in Sarasota.
As of 5 p.m. ET Tuesday, Milton was located around 480 miles southwest of Tampa and sustaining wind speeds of up to 165 miles per hour, according to the NHC.
The NHC has been tracking Milton’s path for several days and predicted over the weekend that the storm could make landfall as early as Wednesday afternoon. As the storm approaches, however, that timeline has been pushed back.
Forecasters at the NHC now predict Milton will make contact in the Tampa Bay region around 2 a.m. ET Thursday. The eye of the storm will travel across central Florida and reach its eastern coast by 2 p.m. Thursday.
“On the forecast track, the center of Milton will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through Wednesday, make landfall along the west-central coast of Florida Wednesday night, and move off the east coast of Florida over the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday,” read the NHC said.
Univision postponed Trump’s planned town hall due to Hurricane Milton. The event, initially scheduled for Tuesday in Miami, has been rescheduled to October 16.
Meanwhile, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ Univision town hall will proceed as planned, with the event set for Thursday in Las Vegas. Both town halls will air at 10 p.m. on those dates.
Orlando’s tourism industry began slowing down on Tuesday as at least three major theme parks and the main airport announced closures in anticipation of Milton’s impending arrival.
Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld will close their theme parks and related entertainment facilities on Wednesday. Universal and SeaWorld will remain closed on Thursday, and Disney is likely to stay closed beyond that.
Universal has also canceled its Halloween Horror Nights events scheduled for both days. These closures coincide with Orlando International Airport’s decision to cease operations on Wednesday morning. The airport is the nation’s seventh busiest and the most trafficked in Florida.
